fitting in to society's standards may not be the answer

Don’t let society choose who you should be!

Fitting in or Standing Out. What do YOU do? Do you run with the sheep … or are you a lone wolf?

I don’t know about any of you but all through my life I’ve felt this intense fear of what would happen if I didn’t fit in with the rest of society.

Back through history when you looked at tribes and the way society worked, if you strayed from the norm you’d get left to die or sent to a mental asylum for seeing the world through different eyes.

But here we are in the 21st century where things are very different! But why are they different? Because over the years the people we now admire dared to break the mould of society’s standards.  They dared to be individual and seek their own path.

think about things differently

Here are some who have dared to be different and what they have to say….

“You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.” – Richard Branson

“Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower” – Steven Jobs

“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” Walt Disney

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” Albert Einstein

“I plan on being an engineer at NASA…I have no choice but to be the first.” – Mary Jackson

All these incredible people led their own lives going against the grain not fearing what the rest of the world was doing.  Because fitting in wasn’t an option.

Thankfully they did because they showed us what not fitting in looks like, which is …. SUCCESS!

Fitting in is Tiring!

We live in a digital world now which means sadly we are constantly comparing ourselves with the people on our screens! Whether we admit it or not we all do it at some point even subconsciously.

You’re only ever seeing what you’re allowed to see! The grass might look greener on the other side but that’s probably because they’ve used a FILTER (for real!).

If you are reading this, you’re probably tired of trying to be someone that everyone else wants you to be. So why are you doing it?

fitting in is damaging to you, you can feel suffocated and overwhelmed

We are force-fed from a young age that you go to school; then after you finish school you go off to get a degree of some sort; and then build a career working that 9-5 life.  Find someone to share your life with, get married and have kids.

Which works out perfectly fine if that’s YOUR path, the path you genuinely feel is aligned with your truest desires.  The path that leaves you feeling like you’re living to your full potential and you have no doubt in your mind about it.

But what if you are someone who started to try fit into the role society has set for us and you constantly feel like you DON’T BELONG because you just DON’T FIT IN?

You become miserable!

It becomes hard to breathe and nothing will ever actually “feel right” because it isn’t. You shouldn’t have to force yourself to enjoy a life you don’t want.

Here’s a visual example of what this looks like….

We had a massive laugh that day, but seriously, if you’re reading this you’re probably tired of trying to be someone everyone else wants you to be.

What if you decided at 18 you wanted to be an Accountant because that’s what you were made to believe would be the best thing for you (based on everyone else’s opinions on what was right for your life).  So you went and studied Accounting, only to realise at 30 that you hate your profession and its not your true calling…and all you really want is to be a stay at home mum who works for herself running her own Lash Business? or Florist, or Interior Decorating?

Would you squish those feelings down because you’re trying to fit in? Or do you step away from the crowd and push for your right to walk your own path?

So honestly, I say SCREW IT!

Embrace the unknowing and unknown.

Nobody wants to live a mediocre life, so stick your middle finger up to fitting in and start living your life authentically to your needs and wants.

Acknowledge the fear but don’t let it hold you back! Use it to fuel your fire of change!

Who cares what people will think, believe in yourself! Learn a new skill set, quit that 9-5 job you hate! Run your own business, run your own life!

Why? Because at the end of the day, YOU are the only person who needs to be pleased with the life you lead.

I can guarantee nobody will be losing sleep over what you’re doing.  And if they’re talking about you, it’s probably more to do with their own fears about how THEY feel stuck in the mould created for them and are envious of you.

Just Do You.

When I was 7 years old my mum gave me some good advice after placing first in my running race at school.  She said:

“You were so concerned about where everyone else was in the race that you almost lost. Always put your blinkers on, focus on the end and give it everything you’ve got.”

Back then that advice only seemed fitting in the moment, but really it rings true for every aspect of life. Stop focusing on everyone else around you.

You can get so busy fitting in there’s nothing left to actually succeed and be happy.

Industry leaders don’t become Leaders by fitting in, they are constantly evolving and bettering themselves and shaking things up for the sake of their business.  Let’s be real, nobody wants to start a business just to be OK, meh.

You want to be the best of the best and the first step to being the best is recognising you need to…..

Stay in your own lane, run your own race at your own pace.
